sIDIt Success Story

Community Connections Society of Southeast BC (CCSSEBC) located in Cranbrook awared $25,000 Grant in 2018

Farm Kitchen has been a direct benefit to local businesses. Since its opening (Dec 2017), Farm Kitchen has supported 24 food-focused entrepreneurs. This support has ranged from providing a production space, hosting workshops, sponsorship of training and a recent 8-week food business accelerator pilot program. Farm Kitchen has been strengthening the local food system by supporting those that produce products locally. We are creating a culture (through networking and awareness) that supports local producers thus further enhancing local food production as a viable employment opportunity.

In the past 22 months we have provided sponsorship for training at The College of the Rockies, partnered with the Aspire Program and Kootenay Employment Services to provide job readiness training for food-based employment and launched an 8-week food business accelerator pilot project facilitated by Grounded Strategies.

The project has grown and changed since our first vision, but its overall goals remain the same, support food entrepreneurs in developing, operating and growing successful businesses. The project has checked off many milestones and continues to grow its list of regular kitchen users.

Farm Kitchen continues to employ 1 permanent part time employee to run and over see the kitchen.A summer student was hired during our busier months.Depending on new equipment to install, cleaning to be done or programs running, during the past year we have required the services of at least 4 temporary/contract positions.

The kitchen has also indirectly created jobs as a result of new projects and businesses launching from the space. From example, the Cranbrook Food Recovery Coalition stated in June and rents Farm Kitchen space it has also hire 5 part time staff.

We gratefully acknowledge the financial support of SIDIT and give thanks to the SIDIT Board of Directors for recognizing the importance of this project.
